THE BIO   John began his musical career at the age of 14, when he was given an acoustic guitar, and a friend's drum kit was stored at his house. Although he has pursued those instruments to date, the bass had a special calling after he heard a solo played by an influential bassist. The thicker strings, and steady bottom-end of the instrument drew him in, and he almost immediately made a firm decision to pursue his passion that he had for the bass. His extremely supportive parents bought him two things that changed his life - one being the bass, and the other a camera. He found a teacher that he really liked, local accomplished  bassist Joe Orlando, who had years of experience playing gigs around the city, and was on his way.

John quickly progressed to play his first real gig five months later at the age of 15 with high school friends at a local music store in Burlington, Ontario (G.B. Sound). Most of the audience consisted of many older musicians from local high schools, and he obviously made an impact due to the fact that he was approached to join three other bands that night. Twenty years later, and approaching a 2,000 gig marker, that pivotal night was the official launch to his career in the music industry.

Today in 2010 at the start of the new decade, John is versed in many diverse popular musical styles, as the bands he has been a part of have greatly varied. A great way to learn a genre or musical language is to be immersed in it, and this has been the case for John in many instances. He continues to be inspired, influenced, and open to all forms of music, which is the universal language. Currently, he is working on his own full length album which he performs under the name "John Boy" given to him by his friends, which will include pop, world and Kirtan vibes. He has performed as much as 250 gigs a year at times with his current band, and the bookings range from everything from duos, and small pubs to large festivals, fundraisers & corporate events all around the province of Ontario.

THE KILLIN' TIME BAND
2006
- To Date (2010)

In early 2006, John joined former band mate from Pailface Boogie Brad Hails, and his good friend Jaret Koop to turn a regular, fun acoustic gig into a massively successful band around the Southern Ontario circuit. The first drummer to join was classically jazz-trained Mike Rittenhouse, who provided a solid base to start gigging, and local legend Tim Park became a regular addition. The band has had many, many regular guest appearances over the years from numerous talented musicians in the area, all of which, have been a big part of the success of the band.

With over 1000 festival, corporate, charity and live venue appearances in just four years the The Killin’ Time Band produce a wildly entertaining sound which blends pop, blues, country, funk, and reggae, while still maintaining a rock edge. Their catchy, danceable, heady mix of fun is what music should be all about.

This professional Canadian music scene powerhouse is made up of Brad Hails, grandson of order of Canada recipient and country music hall of famer Gordie Tapp (Hee Haw, CBC radio and television), Jaret Koop (Juno award winner Tomi Swick, Joel Parisien), John Bauld (DJ Jones of the legendary James Brown band & the Platters) and Paul Dickinson  (Udrum custom drum builder, Kenny Munshaw). Having graced the stages of some of the countries most famous venues, festivals & events The Killin’ Time band's professionalism, ability to read the crowd, love for music and experience is the key to their incredible live performances. | Website

PAILFACE BOOGIE
2005

In late 2004, John was asked by his high school friend Bobby Ives to help out on some tracks in the studio on their upcoming record. The band had been around since 2000 under various lineups, and the only remaining original member at that point was the lead singer/guitarist Brad Hails. The lineup consisted of Brad Hails, Bobby Ives, Jeff Clancy & Matty "Magus" Clancy.

The studio sessions were a hit, and the band asked John to play a gig at a local club since he knew the material.

Pailface Boogie was definitely more than just an act. It was a movement, and a reason not to grow up as well as to call in sick for work the next day because you had been at a gig the night before. After John had participated in about 40 gigs or so in 2005 (and an equal amount of after parties), many of the members decided to go their own individual ways.

John went on to become a member of The Killin' Time band which started from an acoustic gig that lead singer Brad Hails had with Jaret Koop at a friend's pub. For the longest time, the guys performed without a name, and would mention to the audience that they were just "Killin' Time". The name stuck, and formed a great band. | Website

D.J JONES
2002
- 2005

John met D.J. Jones at the age of 17, through his girlfriend at the time. John later wed D.J's step daughter which made him an official  part of the family. D.J. was a huge influence, and teacher to John, and after years of watching D.J. entertain, and wow audiences, John was given the chance to get up on stage and play a dozen or so full gig's alongside his father-in-law, over a period of about three years. These times took John's  playing and performing to a different level, as D.J had graced the stage alongside many American music icons  over his career.

Hailing from Bastrop, Louisiana, D.J. Jones developed his talents singing gospel in the church choir. He soon picked up the guitar and never looked back, moving on to host and perform on a local Sunday morning gospel show, spotlight on the "Gospel Notes".

As a guitarist, vocalist and songwriter, D.J. has performed alongside such luminaries as Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, AI Green, Aretha Franklin, Sam & Dave and Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes. Do you remember these greats? The Brooklyn All-stars, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, Shirley Caesar and many more - too numerous to mention.

He eventually relocated to upstate New York where he was instrumental in forming "The Dynamic Insiders", that sensational vocal group that became an integral part of the James Brown Revue for 12 years, recording under the Mercury Polydor/Polygram label. "Working with James Brown was one of the highlights of my career" says Jones. "His best advice was, 'if you can't perform on stage what you do in the studio, then don't do it at all' ". Jones moved to Canada in the early 80's, touring nationwide with "The Platters" and "The Ink Spots" as a guitarist and lead/background vocalist.

Settling locally in the area mid 80's, he has become a very well known and respected icon in both the music and film/commercials industry, carded as a member of ACTRA, all its affiliates and A.F. of M. D.J. Jones established a Jazz/R&B group, known as "The Perfect Note" to compliment and enhance his musical versatility, promising his audience a very entertaining evening. He's a dynamic professional entertainer who prides himself on producing and executing what today's viewing and listening audiences demand.

WILD SMOKE
1997-2005

Wild Smoke began when John and his photography mentor Ron Kuzyk got together with a fellow co-worker. They were introduced to Montreal's Mike Krajewski, who had recently moved to Ontario at that point. Mark and Mike had met at a jam night, and this unit became solid friends, performing under "An Uncasual Experience", "The Mike K Band", and were later dubbed "Wild Smoke" by D.J. Jones. He mistakenly introduced them at a gig as "Wild Smoke", although it was in fact "Lazy Smoke", and the name stuck. John moved back to playing bass from drums, as he was versatile enough to fill either role depending on musician availability.

There were many members in this band over the eight years that they performed together including Steve Tomalty, Ryan DeGelder and Randy Kuzyk to name a few of the guys who appeared more frequently in the lineup.

The band established a regular schedule at venues in and around the Golden Horseshoe area of Ontario. John moved on to join Pailface Boogie in 2005, Mike & Ryan started a band named Higher Octane, and Ron and Randy went on to create Undying union, where John had drummed for a time.

STATE OF CANE
1995 -1996

State of Cane was John's former band Turkey, who changed their name, and sound somewhat, after a record company suggestion. Member's included Scott Langley & Dave Harris. The three high school friends had formed an inseparable  bond through the early days of their former band.

The guys worked with a great team which was put together with help from John's parents, who also financed the project. They produced a self-titled album with Trevor G, of the Shelton Group, at Wellesley Studio. Canadian music and talent management veteran Kevin LaFlare provided help there, and Brian Carson (formerly of Capitol Records) was also on board. They had the opportunity to play many of Toronto's legendary venues in the process.

State of Cane was a bitter-sweet time for the guys. They were really starting to achieve great success, and build a solid following in Toronto, as well as make some alliances with other new, great talented acts. After about a year and a half of performing at a very demanding pace, these three high school best friends were drawn to go different ways as often happens in life. Scott and John still collaborate and write music together on occasion, as both State of Cane, and Turkey represent a very special time in their lives, which holds that bond to this day.

TURKEY
1991-1995

Turkey was made up of Scott Langley, Dave Harris and John, who started the band at the age of 16 back in 1991. The band was together from 1991 to 1995, under the name Turkey who were a very unique brand of progressive rock/metal. They performed under the name "State of Cane for about a year and a half with the same line-up which was a record company decision..

The band cranked out all kinds of songs having an album for every year that they were together, recording and producing all of them themselves. Turkey was fortunate enough to have lived in a very special era when there was quite an excellent Burlington/Hamilton music scene happening at the time. In the early days they shared good times with many great bands such as Nihility, Gleet, Rainbow Butt Monkeys (who went on to become massively successful Finger 11), Col Chunk/Copper Throat, Encased, Ritual Abuse, Trunk, Blues at Sunrise, Jay Clowater, Tom's Lunch, Chore, GooHammer, Failsafe, Gorp and many others along the way.  This was a time of the Kirk House, as well as Jay Askie who was everyone's favorite sound man at Manhatten Rocks, the Universe, and the X-Club.

During this period there were younger chaps putting bands together such as Slurpee Mundae who went on to become Idle Sons and various versions of Grade, Sian etc etc etc being born. They are still very fond memories from John's early years, and represent a very special era as well as time in music.
